Henry Ortner Jr. dedicated much of his life to community service. He was a particularly unique resource for the people of Westbrook, CT. Through his many years of service on the Planning and Harbor Commissions, Mr. Ortner helped shape the current and future direction of this community. Henry Ortner was a career diesel engineering specialist who applied his talents above and beyond his specialty.

Purpose - Established in his memory by his late wife, Esther Ortner, it was created as a living memorial in recognition for the effort and dedication of Henry Ortner, Jr.

Criteria for Selection -

1. The candidate must intend to pursue a career in engineering, sciences, nursing, or any technical field including health services.
2. The candidate must show academic achievement as well as school and community service.
3. The candidate must exhibit good moral and ethical character.
4. The candidate's financial need is a consideration.
5. The candidate must be a member of the Westbrook High School graduating class.

Scholarship Board - This award is at the decision of the Trustees of the Westbrook Foundation with the help of recommendations given by the principal and guidance counselor of Westbrook High School.

Procedure to Apply -

1. The candidate must complete "Westbrook Foundation Application".
2. The candidate must complete a 200-300 word essay that lists interests, ambitions, concerns, and /or specific plans for the future. The essay must have your social security number on the top, right-hand corner. Your name should appear only on the back of the essay.
3. The candidate's official transcript needs to be attached.
4. The candidate must provide two letters of recommendations.

Notification - A formal presentation of the scholarship will be given to the successful candidate at graduation. An alternate and second are chosen, but not announced, in the event that the principal recipient does not enter college.

Amount of Award - Three awards of $7000 with equal payments divided over four years ($1,750/yr) will be awarded to the successful candidates at the completion of their first semester if in good academic standing (GPA 2.7 or better). Standing shall be determined by both the fall semester GPA as well as the cumulative average.

Deadline - Applications are to be mailed to The Westbrook Foundation, Inc. and postmarked on or before May 1.
